In partnership with the start-up company SuprTecBox, we have developed a biobank database, which is in use at St James’s and, through Biobank Ireland’s License Agreement, is open to the network hospitals. The new database replaces the original CAISIS database. Additional research groups, including the Irish Blood Cancer Network, a multicenter Irish research consortium based in Galway, will use the new database. It is intended that ultimately this will become a common database for Irish biobanks.
A web portal (online catalogue) of coded biobank samples, restricted data and biobank capabilities is being developed in 2015-2016, with the approval of the Research and Ethics Committee. A development and design workshop for input from industry was held on October 15th, 2015. The portal is the first of its kind in Ireland, and will provide academic and industry researchers with information on samples of research interest that may be made available to them for ethical scientifically approved projects (see For Researchers).
